BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand is aggressively expanding its airport infrastructure and flight connections with the aim of becoming a significant regional hub for tourism and investment. The government is planning modernizations at seven regional airports, increasing international routes to destinations like Krabi and Hua Hin, and advancing the ambitious U-Tapao/Eastern Aviation City project.
Government Goal: Improved Connectivity and Increased Logistics Capacity
Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana has identified enhanced connectivity and strengthened aviation and logistics capabilities as key political priorities. This strategy is designed to foster closer ties between major cities and emerging tourist destinations.
The Department of Airports has pledged its support, committing to improving infrastructure, personnel, and transport links to facilitate the planned expansion.
Driving the Plans Forward
Deputy Minister of Transport Phattrapong Phattraprasit has been discussing the details with the Department of Airports, the Civil Aviation Training Centre, Thai Airways, and the Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel. These discussions focused on expanding flight networks and operational matters.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is concurrently working on new flight paths to connect primary cities with secondary tourist centers.
More Domestic Connections, More International Flights
The plan includes strengthening connections between large cities and destinations such as Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Udon Thani to improve access to regional travel spots. This initiative is expected to stimulate domestic tourism and foster regional development.
Concurrently, the government aims to attract more international flights from Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, introducing direct routes to Krabi, Surat Thani, and Hua Hin.
Seven Airports Selected for Modernization
Seven regional airports have been identified for infrastructure upgrades: Nakhon Si Thammarat, Lampang, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Hua Hin (Prachuap Khiri Khan), Phrae, and Roi Et. These airports are slated to be equipped to handle increasing passenger numbers.
The modernization efforts are intended to support future passenger growth and demand from the tourism sector, thereby boosting local economies.
Hua Hin Prepares for International Flights
The Hua Hin Airport is receiving particular attention. Security standards are being enhanced to enable the resumption of international flights and meet foreign traffic requirements. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, direct connections to Kuala Lumpur were operational.
According to authorities, Hua Hin Airport can process 300 passengers per hour and accommodate two aircraft, such as Airbus A320 or Boeing 737-800, simultaneously.
U-Tapao and Eastern Aviation City as a Major Project
The U-Tapao Airport / Eastern Aviation City project is envisioned as a regional transport and logistics hub, with an investment volume of 218.8 billion Baht and a capacity for up to 60 million passengers annually.
