PHUKET, THAILAND – Phuket International Airport has refuted claims circulating on social media that travelers could pay for expedited passage through immigration on May 31. The airport insists no additional fees are charged for preferential treatment and is implementing measures to alleviate peak hour congestion.
Airport Denies Fees for Fast Processing
The airport clarified that there is no policy allowing additional fees for prioritized immigration processing. According to an announcement, the responsible immigration services operate according to state standards, and no privileges are offered for payment.
These statements counter allegations made by foreign tourists on social networks, who reported long waits at immigration checkpoints and suggested that money could buy faster processing.
Travelers Reported Long Queues Online
Reports of extensive waiting times at entry controls surfaced online, with foreign tourists alleging the possibility of expedited passage for a fee. These accounts prompted the airport to issue a public clarification and initiate an investigation into the allegations.
More Staff and Better Queue Management
The airport has increased the presence of support and passenger management staff within the terminal to better monitor queuing. These measures are intended to assist travelers and improve queue management, particularly during peak travel periods.
Additional personnel are now on hand to help manage passenger flow and ensure adherence to queue management protocols.
ABC System to Reduce Wait Times
To alleviate pressure, the airport plans to introduce an automated passport control system, referred to as the Auto Channel/ABC system, to expedite processing. This system is part of ongoing preparations to shorten throughput times, despite physical space limitations.
The automated system is designed to significantly reduce the amount of time each passenger spends at the immigration counter.
Investigation of Online Allegations Underway
In collaboration with relevant authorities, the airport is investigating the online accusations, examining whether individuals outside official channels have made misleading statements. The airport also emphasized its continued coordination with relevant agencies to manage flight schedules and passenger flows.
The focus of the investigation is on identifying any unauthorized individuals or groups who may have spread misinformation.
What Travelers Should Know Now
The airport acknowledged that rising passenger numbers and limited space can lead to confusion but promised further measures to enhance the travel experience for both Thai and international passengers. The introduction of the automated passport control system and enhanced collaboration with authorities are expected to ensure greater efficiency and transparency in passenger processing in the long term.
