Sa Kaeo, Thailand – The government has refuted a claim circulating on social media about the Aranyaprathet border crossing opening for Cambodian students.
Government: Border Opening Report is False
Ratchada Thanadirek, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, stated that the information regarding the opening of the Aranyaprathet border crossing was false and had caused public misunderstanding.
“The government respects the right to freedom of expression, but the dissemination of misinformation about the border is serious because it impairs society’s understanding, hinders officials’ work, and can cause unnecessary panic,” said Ratchada.
Local Media: Khlong Luek Remained Closed
The governor of Sa Kaeo Province guided media representatives to the Khlong Luek border crossing area on June 1st at 3:30 PM, accompanied by the deputy governor and security personnel.
At the site, reports confirmed that the border crossing was not open in any capacity, contrary to online assertions.
Anutin Calls for Careful Border Management
Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the importance of border security. He instructed authorities to proceed with caution and consider public sentiment.
He clarified that measures at the Thai-Cambodian border should be based on security, law, and verifiable facts, not rumors from online media.
Case Filed Against Facebook User
The governor of Sa Kaeo Province directed the legal department at 4:00 PM to file a complaint with the Sathani Tamruat Phu Thon Khlong Luek police station against a Facebook user.
The complaint was filed for spreading misinformation under Section 14(2) of the Computer Crime Act, initiating legal proceedings by the provincial administration.
Background: False Report About School Visits
Social media had claimed that the Aranyaprathet border crossing was opened to allow Cambodian students to enter for classes.
This assertion led to misunderstandings about the border situation and prompted the media tour and subsequent legal actions.
Government Warns of Consequences and Takes Action
The government declared it would act against false reports that disrupt official work or cause unnecessary unrest among the public, with relevant agencies to pursue violations under the law.
The criminal prosecution of the Facebook user is proceeding under Section 14(2) of the Computer Crime Act. Police at Sathani Tamruat Phu Thon Khlong Luek confirmed the border remains closed with no exceptions.
