BANGKOK, THAILAND – Mobile users across Thailand must update their SIM card registration by August 30 or lose the ability to make outgoing calls.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) said the measure targets so-called straw man SIM cards and digital crime. Incoming calls will still work, but outgoing calls get blocked.
Outgoing calls blocked after deadline
Anyone who misses the verification deadline by the end of August faces immediate restrictions. They can still receive calls, but cannot dial out.
The NBTC said it is not a full suspension. The limit is meant to push customers to update their data with their mobile provider and confirm their identity.
Deadline runs out on August 30
The NBTC urged users and mobile operators to complete the identity check and refresh customer records. Affected customers should watch for SMS or other official messages from their provider.
They should follow the instructions in those messages to finish the update. Anyone with questions should contact their mobile network’s service centre.
Registered name must match the user
The check also covers SIM cards where the registered name does not match the real user. The NBTC gave the example of children using a SIM card registered in a parent’s name.
In such cases, the status must be corrected immediately. The rule applies to both mobile customers and providers.
NBTC cracks down on digital fraud
Acting NBTC Secretary-General Trairat Viriyasirikul said the measure is part of stricter rules against tech-related crime. Authorities are targeting SIM cards used for so-called mule account models and registrations that do not match the actual user.
According to the NBTC, the initiative follows earlier regulatory frameworks from previous governments to fight the rising wave of digital fraud. The restrictions take effect immediately after the deadline passes.
