Thailand Battles One Million Fakes

Fake News Tsunami Hits Thailand

Bangkok – Thailand is facing an unprecedented wave of misinformation. In just seven days, nearly one million fake news stories were detected, prompting alarm at the Digital Ministry’s Anti-Fake-News Centre. Many of the most brazen claims involve alleged border incidents with Cambodia, shaking public confidence.

Numbers That Shock

Wetang Phuangsup, Secretary-General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission (DES), revealed the startling figures: Between 5 and 11 September, 998,983 fake reports were registered, 807 of which required formal verification.

Most alerts came through social listening – systematic monitoring of online conversations – accounting for 785 notifications. Additional reports arrived via popular platforms like Line and Facebook.

Top Three Most Outrageous Lies

The riskiest false reports were tied to national security:

  1. Alleged gunfire at the Preah Vihear Temple during the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute

  2. Claims of stolen Thai cultural artifacts, including traditional costumes, by Cambodia

  3. Rumours of a 16-kilometre fence along border markers 50 and 51

Authorities warn these claims can provoke panic, confusion, and potentially dangerous misunderstandings.

Categories of Fake News

The Digital Ministry divides false reports into five main groups:

  • Government policy and security issues: 121 reports

  • Health and illegal products: 25 reports

  • Disasters: 14 reports

  • Economy: 4 reports

  • Internet crime: 52 reports

One particularly malicious claim involved alleged changes to government drug reimbursement policies, falsely stating that only generics would be covered – which is untrue.

Thailand’s Fight Against the Lies

The Anti-Fake-News Centre is working at full capacity. Using advanced AI monitoring systems, suspicious reports are automatically flagged and sent for verification. Yet the sheer speed at which misinformation spreads presents a massive challenge. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Line are cooperating, but completely stopping the flood of fake news appears impossible.

Authorities continue to urge citizens to verify news from official sources and remain vigilant as the nation grapples with this deluge of digital deception.
