BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thai narcotics officers dismantled an alleged international heroin courier network that used postal parcels to ship drugs to Australia.
Airport inspection uncovers hidden heroin
Officers from the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) and the Airport Interdiction Task Force (AITF) acted after spotting suspicious shipments in the Suvarnabhumi Airport Free Zone bound for Australia. In a simple cardboard box, they discovered a concealed compartment containing pure heroin weighing 1.52 kilograms.
“The concealment was professional, but our officers are trained,”
said an ONCB spokesperson. A large-scale search was launched for the senders, and the trail led investigators back into the capital.
Arrests at Lat Phrao post office
At a post office inside a shopping mall in the Lat Phrao district, investigators moved in and detained two Vietnamese nationals who were attempting to send additional parcels. These packages also contained heroin, totaling 1.4 kilograms, and the packaging method was identical to the earlier find. Two more suspects, allegedly stationed as guards in the mall, were arrested, temporarily disabling the courier network while inquiries into possible ringleaders continued.
Raids in Bangkok and Samut Prakan
Police then searched three addresses in Samut Prakan and Bangkok linked to the case. In a condominium in Samut Prakan, they found only two grams of ketamine, but a raid in Bangkok’s Bang Na district yielded another Vietnamese suspect and a substantial cache of narcotics. The haul included 75 grams of ketamine, 107 grams of crystal meth, 1.7 kilograms of MDMA, 309 ecstasy pills, 230 grams of cocaine and 380 grams of Nimetazepam.
Professional packing equipment seized
Alongside the drugs, officers confiscated what they described as complete packaging equipment, including digital scales, vacuum sealers and receipts. Mobile phones and a laptop were also seized, while a third apartment in Lat Phrao contained nothing illegal.
“This was a highly professional operation. The group was well organized,”
said one investigator at the scene.
Links to wider international trade
The case highlighted the wider international reach of drug trafficking through Thailand. On 22 November, ONCB officers had already arrested two Japanese suspects accused of smuggling drugs to South Korea on behalf of a Yakuza network. A South Korean accomplice remained at large, underscoring that, despite multiple arrests and raids at different locations, cross-border drug organizations continued to operate.
Thailand’s role as regional hub
Authorities said Thailand remained a central transit point for international narcotics flows. The ONCB indicated that it was responding with maximum pressure against syndicates using the country as a hub for smuggling routes to destinations such as Australia and South Korea.
