Koh Phangan, Thailand – A Thai lawmaker has warned of security risks and lax visa controls over the growing presence of Israeli nationals on the island.
Potranan raises Koh Phangan in parliament
On May 6, 2026, Chris Potranan, a list MP and leader of the Economic Party, addressed parliament about the island in southern Thailand. He urged the government to take the development seriously.
According to his estimate, about 7,000 Israelis are currently on Koh Phangan, including around 4,000 long-term residents and another 3,000 tourists. Potranan said his words were not directed against any ethnic group.
Warning over neutrality and security risks
Potranan made clear what alarmed him: He sees risks from Israel’s regional conflicts, especially with Iran. A large, concentrated Israeli presence could endanger Thailand’s neutrality or bring security threats.
He also pointed to Thailand’s visa-free policy for Israelis, which in his view opens the door without sufficient scrutiny. This could also allow criminals or undesirable elements to enter more easily, he said.
Complaints about noise, drugs, and regulations
On Koh Phangan, resentment has been growing for months. Critics accuse businesses run by Israelis of not always fully complying with Thai regulations.
Residents also complain about party noise, alleged drug use, and environmental and cultural impacts. According to Potranan, the economic benefit is also being questioned because money is spent via Israeli payment apps and Thailand reportedly gets little from it.
Authorities and local resistance
Potranan called on the Internal Security Operations Command, the Interior Ministry, and the Foreign Ministry to review and enforce the laws more strictly. He also mentioned Chabad centers as possible weak points.
Thai authorities have already conducted raids against unlicensed schools and businesses, including one operation where dozens of Israeli children were discovered in an improperly licensed facility. On the island, local campaigns have also been launched to “save” Koh Phangan from what is perceived as over-foreignization.
A nationally explosive issue
The debate has now gained nationwide attention. Potranan sees it as an issue for all of Thailand, not just Koh Phangan. No immediate government response to his inquiry has been reported. Meanwhile, the discussion about tourism, foreign investment, and enforcement of rules in popular destinations continues.
