Thai baht surge pressures central bank

Currency hits strongest level since 2021 as policymakers weigh response

BANGKOK, THAILAND – The Thai baht hit its strongest level in more than three years, intensifying pressure on the central bank ahead of a key policy meeting.

Baht climbs to multi-year high

The Thai currency reached its firmest level since June 2021 on Monday, briefly trading at 31.523 per US dollar. The move put the Bank of Thailand in a difficult position as it prepared for a monetary policy decision on Wednesday, with growing expectations of further easing signals from policymakers.

Gold rally and weak dollar fuel gains

Since the start of the year, the baht had appreciated by more than eight percent, supported by record gold prices and a weaker US dollar. This made it one of the strongest-performing Asian currencies over the period. The central bank tried to counter the rise by tightening foreign-exchange forward rules for gold traders, but the measures had only limited impact.

Exporters squeezed by strong currency

While a robust baht typically reflected economic resilience, it posed a growing challenge for Thai exporters. New US tariffs under the Trump administration were already weighing on shipments abroad. A more expensive domestic currency made products “Made in Thailand” less attractive to foreign buyers, threatening competitiveness and market share.

Analysts label strength ‘undesirable’

Experts such as Wee Khoon Chong of BNY Mellon viewed the currency’s strength as problematic.

“The strength of the currency is therefore ‘undesirable’.”

said Wee Khoon Chong, BNY Mellon expert. They argued that, given weak economic growth and easing inflation, a strong baht was counterproductive. A loosening of monetary policy in the coming year could therefore become unavoidable, depending on how the exchange rate developed.

Tourism and gold trading lift demand

Two drivers were particularly important for the baht’s ascent: active gold trading and the peak tourism season. Thailand was in the midst of its high season, with millions of foreign visitors bringing in foreign currency and underpinning the exchange rate. At the same time, record gold prices encouraged speculative traders to engage in extensive FX forward transactions.

Regulatory steps show only modest effect

The central bank recognised the risks and intervened with regulatory adjustments. However, the measures were not sufficient to fully halt the currency’s upward trajectory. Seasonal fourth-quarter factors, especially the Christmas period, were expected to continue supporting the baht, increasing the urgency for the central bank, which was already under pressure.

Political tensions add uncertainty

Economic forces were not the only influence on the currency. Political uncertainty in Thailand also had the potential to cool the rally. Ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia were unsettling investors, and a general election scheduled for February 2026 added further doubts about the country’s future political direction.

Barclays warns of risk premium from 2026

Strategists at Barclays led by Audrey Ong took a cautious view of the outlook.

“They expect exchange-rate stability in the short term, supported by seasonal effects.”

said Audrey Ong, Barclays strategist. But they warned that once 2026 began, a political risk premium could emerge, particularly if forming a new government proved difficult, which would weigh on the baht and inject fresh uncertainty.

Central bank meeting in the spotlight

The Bank of Thailand’s monetary policy committee was due to meet on Wednesday for a closely watched session. Analysts expected further signals toward monetary easing, noting that a strong baht, weak growth and falling inflation pointed clearly in that direction. The central bank could use the meeting to prepare potential interest-rate cuts.

Delicate policy balance for Bangkok

Market participants were monitoring every statement from the central bank for clues on the next steps. Any comment could either put the baht under pressure or provide fresh support. Policymakers faced a fine balance: too much easing risked reinforcing the currency’s strength, while too little could endanger already fragile growth, leaving the next 48 hours critical for Thailand’s policy path.
