It was meant to be an ordinary day. On June 24, Phetcharee, 31, entered a forest near her community in Bueng Kan province to collect mushrooms. Instead, she found a corpse. The girl’s stepfather, 27-year-old Nirun, described the child’s last known moments to the police in Seka. Mook had left the family home around 8 PM on the evening of June 23. At her side was 15-year-old Earth, a relative by marriage, who is now the primary suspect. The child never returned home after that.

Wasinee, 22, Phetcharee’s younger sister and married to Earth, recounted a crucial version of events. Mook had asked her to drive her to a friend’s house. As Wasinee was busy with her own child, she sent her husband Earth instead. She is convinced of his innocence, stating that Earth returned home shortly after and said a friend would bring Mook back. Wasinee emphasized that Earth does not use drugs, smoke, or drink alcohol. The only peculiar detail was Earth’s absence when Mook’s body was discovered; he was reportedly helping a friend on a plantation in another province.

On June 25, Earth was summoned to the police station for questioning. He categorically denied raping or killing his niece. However, his statement contained a significant gap. The 15-year-old admitted to going into the forest with Mook. He then claimed to have noticed another man and, from that point on, could not recall anything.
