Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach Claims Life of Young Student in Sudden Tragedy
A 16-year-old girl from Phatthalung has drowned at Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach, highlighting the hidden dangers lurking beneath the island’s tranquil surface.
Fatal Accident Strikes at Popular Phuket Beach
On the afternoon of October 6, Wimonrat Yang-aphai, a student who had moved to Phuket for her studies, went swimming with her friend Kasakorn Prayot. The pair ventured about 50 metres from the shore when powerful waves suddenly pulled them under.
Resort security staff and local residents rushed to help, quickly alerting emergency services. While Kasakorn was rescued with minor injuries after swallowing seawater, Wimonrat was found unconscious and without a pulse.
Desperate Rescue Efforts Fail
First responders immediately began first aid on the beach before rushing Wimonrat to Thalang Hospital. Doctors attempted CPR, but all efforts proved futile. Wimonrat was pronounced dead later that day.
“There were no signs of violence. The cause of death is drowning,” confirmed Police Colonel Nikorn Chuthong, chief of Thalang Police.
Family Mourns as Body Returns Home
Wimonrat’s grieving family has arranged for her body to be transported back to Phatthalung, where traditional funeral rites will be held. The loss has left her loved ones and the local community in shock.

Bang Tao Beach is usually seen as calm, but sudden currents and waves can turn deadly, especially in the afternoon when winds pick up. Lifeguards warn that the sea can become treacherous without warning.
This tragedy is not isolated. In September, a Russian tourist also drowned at a Phuket beach. Despite red flags and repeated warnings, both tourists and locals continue to underestimate the risks.
Lifeguards Urge Caution
Lifeguards stress the importance of obeying safety warnings, particularly during monsoon season when currents are unpredictable. “Red flags mean swimming is forbidden, but many ignore them,” say rescuers.
The death of Wimonrat Yang-aphai at Bang Tao Beach serves as a stark reminder: even paradise has its perils.
