PHUKET, Thailand – A Myanmar saleswoman was caught by police in Chalong for working with a valid permit — but for the wrong job. Cops used marked banknotes in a sting operation.
She had a work permit allowing her to work as a labourer, not as a salesperson. Police acted on a tip-off from the public about a foreign woman selling goods and handling cash at a grocery store.
Police use marked banknotes in undercover sting
Police from Chalong said they moved after receiving a tip-off. A foreign woman was reportedly selling goods and taking payments inside a grocery shop.
Plainclothes officers entered the store and paid with prepared banknotes. When they identified themselves, they found the marked cash in the woman’s apron.
Work permit only allowed labourer role
The woman, identified as Ms Le, showed a valid passport and a work permit. But a closer inspection revealed the problem.
Her permit only authorised employment as a labourer. It did not cover selling goods, collecting payments, or giving change to customers.
Woman confesses, faces charges
During questioning, Ms Le admitted the allegations, according to police. She said she had sold items, accepted payments, and handed out change.
Her Thai employer was not at the store during the raid. Police charged Ms Le with working outside the scope of her work permit.
Police warn employers, more raids to come
Investigators also seized documents belonging to the employer. The employer could face further legal action, police said.
Officers warned business owners not to use foreign workers in jobs not approved by their permits. Raids to protect jobs for Thai nationals will continue.
