KOH TAO, THAILAND – A 22-year-old Canadian tourist escaped an alleged assault by leaping from a moving motorbike in the early hours of Thursday. Police detained a 19-year-old suspect within eight hours of the incident.
Late-night attack near Koh Tao’s XCo Bar
At around 1 a.m. on Thursday, tourist Julia, aged 22, left the XCo Bar to return to her accommodation. A man on a motorcycle offered a free ride. Instead of taking the main road, he turned into a dark lane on Koh Tao and allegedly attacked her.
“Er versuchte, sie zu begrapschen und sich die Hose herunterzuziehen”
said Koh Tao Police, investigators.
In fear, Julia jumped from the moving motorcycle. The fall caused several abrasions. The assailant tried to overpower her, but she managed to grab her phone and call for help.

Swift response and arrest
After reaching a main road, Julia took a taxi back to the bar, then went to Koh Tao Hospital for treatment. Later that night, she filed a detailed statement. Police officers reviewed CCTV footage across the route and distributed an image of the suspect.
By 9 a.m., around eight hours after the attack, officers arrested a 19-year-old Thai-Myanmar man hiding near a parking area. The suspect was from Ranong Province.
Drug test and confession
At the time of arrest, investigators conducted a urine test that showed positive for methamphetamine. The man admitted the assault and stated that he had borrowed the motorcycle used in the attack. Police seized the bike, the woman’s mobile phone, and the clothes allegedly worn during the assault.
Ongoing investigation and safety concerns
Officials confirmed that the suspect was transferred into police custody for further legal procedures. The incident reignited discussion about tourist safety on Koh Tao, an island known for its dense nightlife and backpacker traffic.
Authorities said further patrol measures would be reinforced at night in tourist areas. The victim was discharged after medical treatment and is under police protection during the investigation.
