KHON KAEN, THAILAND – Police in the northeastern provincial capital arrested a 48-year-old man suspected of carrying out a dramatic gold shop robbery and seizing jewellery worth about 1.9 million baht.
Gold shop raid in Muang district
The robbery took place at a gold shop in Tambon Ban Thum in Muang district of Khon Kaen, where gold necklaces with a total weight of 26 baht were stolen. The suspect, identified by police only as “Kae”, 48, was detained a few days after the crime.
Suspect tracked through CCTV and plantations
Investigators pursued the man after reviewing CCTV footage and analysing his movements in nearby rubber plantations close to his residence in Ban Lao Phon Thong village. Police had earlier offered a reward of 100,000 baht for information leading directly to the arrest of the perpetrator.
Hidden stash and seized motorcycle
After his arrest, the suspect led officers to his house, where the stolen gold jewellery had been hidden inside a steel pillar and further covered with straw. The motorcycle that the man allegedly used to flee the scene was found and seized in a nearby body of water, according to police.
Planned crime scene reconstruction
The deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 4, Pol Maj Gen Noppakao Somanas, said a crime scene reconstruction with the suspect was scheduled to be carried out before noon on Sunday.
“In such reconstructions, Thai police usually recreate the alleged commission of the crime in order to clarify the sequence of events and secure evidence for further proceedings.”
