Student Located After Flight and Hotel Stays
According to police reports, the woman departed Hong Kong on May 31st via flight HX767, arriving in Thailand on June 1st at approximately 02:36. She initially checked into a hotel in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district before moving to another hotel in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. Investigators tracked her movements using immigration stamps, hotel surveillance footage, and witness testimonies to ensure her safe recovery. No alleged accomplices were found at the hotel during the operation.
How the Virtual Kidnapping Scam Operated
Police are classifying the case as a “virtual kidnapping scam.” The fraudsters allegedly impersonated government or law enforcement officials to convince the student she was involved in a criminal case. Investigations indicate that communication with her father, including doctored images depicting her bound and injured, occurred via WeChat. The student reportedly purchased ropes, straps, a knife, body paint, and red lipstick on the perpetrators’ instructions to stage the injuries and create the photographs and videos. For a subsequent hotel check-in, she used a fake passport image provided online.
Millions Transferred Through Nominees
The perpetrators demanded 3 million Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to roughly 12.5 million Baht. While the father did not transfer the full ransom, he had already lost approximately 1.4 million HKD, or about 5.8 million Baht. According to investigators, money was deposited into the student’s account at the Bank of China between May 19th and 20th under the guise of academic support. This money was then quickly distributed through suspected nominee accounts, and the money trail is still being pursued.
Police Warn of International Risks
Police General Tatchai Pitaneelaboot, Deputy National Police Chief and Director of the Royal Thai Police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Centre, described the incident as an example of a new form of cross-border crime where victims are psychologically controlled remotely. Authorities highlighted that these tactics enable perpetrators to exert pressure without physical abduction.
Authorities issued a stern warning that victims could be instructed to travel to other countries, thereby facing genuine human trafficking risks. The Thai authorities announced their commitment to continued cooperation with the police in Hong Kong and other international law enforcement agencies.
Protection of the Student and Investigation Status
The student has been placed in protective custody and is reportedly out of danger, while investigations into the network behind the alleged fraud continue. Authorities are actively reviewing surveillance footage and financial records to identify the masterminds. Thai authorities are working closely with Hong Kong police and international law enforcement agencies to dismantle the criminal network and protect potential future victims.
