BURIRAM, THAILAND – A soldier was killed and a driver is under investigation after a fatal collision outside a military camp.
Tödlicher Crash auf der AusfallstraĂŸe
The fatal crash occurred late on the evening of June 22, 2026, around 9:30 PM on the Buriram-Prakhon Chai road. A black Toyota Vigo pickup truck collided head-on with a motorcycle near the gate of the 23rd Infantry Regiment. The motorcyclist was thrown approximately 30 meters onto the central median. Tragically, all attempts to save him were in vain; 36-year-old Staff Sergeant Naphatsakorn Sommutiram, known affectionately as “Sergeant Khem”, succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene.
Hochzeitspläne und zwei Grenzeinsätze
The local community mourns the loss of a man with an impeccable record. Staff Sergeant Khem served as a soldier in the adjacent camp and had previously survived two dangerous deployments on the border with Cambodia. Neighbors recalled his daily, friendly greetings. “It’s horrific. He served the country on the border, and then something like this happens right outside his door,” said one tearful eyewitness. The soldier had been making concrete plans to marry his girlfriend in the near future.
Fahrer setzte sich unter Schock ab
While the soldier’s body lay on the road, the vehicle involved in the crash sped away. Hours later, police located the heavily damaged pickup truck; its front license plate had fallen off and was found at the accident site. The driver, identified as educational supervisor Thatsawin (full name not released), returned later that same night and surrendered to officers. He stated that he fled the scene out of pure panic, and that as soon as he regained his senses, he went directly to the police.
Anklage trotz Alkohol-Normalwert
Officers from the Mueang Buriram Police Station conducted an alcohol test on the driver, which registered a normal reading, confirming he was sober at the time of the incident. Nevertheless, the police proceeded with charges. The man faces accusations of negligent homicide and hit-and-run for failing to stop, provide aid, or identify himself immediately after the collision.
Ermittlungen gegen Bildungsbeamten
The accident vehicle was impounded, and investigators reviewed footage from two surveillance cameras. The recordings showed Sergeant Khem attempting to turn from the barracks onto the multi-lane road when he was struck with full force by the approaching pickup. The suspect was taken into police custody as investigators work to reconstruct the exact sequence of events, while the barracks mourn their popular comrade.
