Soldier held over alleged assault at Songkran

Royal Thai Army confirmed arrest after 15-year-old reported being harassed near Khao San Road during water festival

BANGKOK, THAILAND – A soldier was arrested after allegedly harassing a 15-year-old girl near Khao San Road during the Songkran holiday, the Royal Thai Army confirmed as it launched an investigation.

Police report and initial investigation

The alleged incident took place on Tuesday at around 11 p.m. in a public toilet located in an alley beside the Nap Park Hostel in Phra Nakhon district. The site was close to Khao San Road, where Songkran celebrations were underway at the time.

According to police, the teenager informed her brother later that same night. She then filed a complaint at Chana Songkhram Police Station, triggering a formal investigation.

On Thursday, the girl’s mother made the case public by contacting the online support page “Sai Mai Tong Rod (Survive Sai Mai).” Authorities said this helped bring wider attention to the allegation and the ongoing inquiry.

Teen’s account and suspect identification

The 15-year-old told investigators she had been out with friends at the Songkran festivities when she encountered a group of eight men. They reportedly had military-style haircuts and addressed one another using military ranks.

She later identified one man from this group as the alleged offender. Officials named him as Pvt Pasit Komahi, a member of the Headquarters Company of the First Army Area.

Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review the sequence of events described by the girl. Evidence collection at the scene and surrounding area is ongoing.

Royal Thai Army confirmation

The Royal Thai Army stated on Thursday that the suspect was indeed attached to the Headquarters Company of the First Army Area. After initial questioning by army officers, the soldier was handed over to police for further interrogation and investigation.

Interrogation records compiled by military authorities were provided to the police. Further investigative steps were to be carried out under police leadership, in line with standard procedures.

Army officials indicated they would cooperate fully with the civilian investigation. They stressed that any proven misconduct by military personnel would be dealt with according to the law and internal regulations.

Legal status and next steps

As of the latest update, authorities had not yet announced any formal charges against the suspect. The case remained in an early stage, with police conducting additional interviews and gathering more evidence.

Once the investigation is completed, prosecutors will decide whether to file charges. If an indictment is issued, the case will move to court and follow the usual legal process.

Police sources said all actions were being taken to ensure a fair and thorough inquiry. They added that the suspect was being treated in accordance with legal safeguards while the complaint from the 15-year-old was being fully examined.

Safety measures and prevention

The case highlighted ongoing security challenges in public spaces, especially during major events such as Songkran. Police and local authorities were working to strengthen their presence at well-known hotspots like Khao San Road.

Child welfare and social service representatives were made available to support the girl and her family. Officials emphasised the importance of awareness about personal safety and the need to report any inappropriate behaviour.

“Authorities underline that prompt reporting of suspected violations is crucial for protecting children and ensuring swift action.”

said local social service representatives, according to the report.
