BANGKOK, THAILAND – Severe storms were moving toward the kingdom and threatened 33 provinces with heavy rain and strong gusts, particularly in the north and east.
Danger from strong gusts
Meteorologists sounded the alarm and warned of extreme weather over large parts of Thailand. Heavy rain and powerful wind gusts were expected to damage buildings and uproot trees.
The north, northeast and east of the country were identified as the most affected regions. Authorities urged the public to exercise the utmost caution in the face of the approaching natural forces.
Hail and lightning expected
From 28 April to 1 May, massive summer thunderstorms were forecast to sweep across Thailand. Officials warned of dangerous hail and sudden lightning strikes.
Northeastern and northern areas were expected to be hit first, before the storm front moved into the central region. Even the capital Bangkok and its surroundings were told to prepare for severe storms.
North struggling with toxic smog
In northern Thailand, the situation was further aggravated by extremely high levels of fine dust pollution. Dense smoke and smog exceeded health limits in many locations.
Residents were advised to avoid outdoor activities and to wear protective masks. Poor ventilation in the affected areas caused the dangerous particles to linger in the air.
Heat fuels the storms
In central Thailand and the east, daytime temperatures climbed to a hot 38 degrees Celsius. This heat, combined with southerly winds, created a dangerous breeding ground for thunderstorms.
Tourist-favourite provinces such as Chonburi, Phuket and Krabi were also affected by rain showers. People at sea were warned to expect suddenly rising high waves.
Caution over sudden weather changes
Weather experts closely monitored the provinces of Chiang Rai, Nan and Phitsanulok, where the heaviest rainfall in the region was feared. These areas were seen as potential hotspots for particularly intense downpours.
Medical professionals urged citizens to pay close attention to their health. They warned that the rapid shift between extreme heat and sudden cold from the rain placed a heavy burden on the body.
