BANGKOK, THAILAND – A car slammed into a fast-food outlet at a gas station in Phra Khanong on Saturday evening, leaving twelve people injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
Car crashes into KFC branch on Sukhumvit 62
The incident occurred at around 8:15 p.m. at a gas station on Sukhumvit 62. A black BMW M5 reportedly pulled out of the queue of vehicles and drove into the glass front of the adjacent KFC outlet without braking.
The impact caused damage to the restaurant’s interior. Guests and staff who were inside at the time were injured.
Twelve injured, including customers and staff
According to police, the injured included five customers, four employees of the branch and two delivery riders. The driver of the BMW, identified as 36-year-old Chen Zhen, was also hurt.
All twelve people received treatment from rescue workers and were taken to three hospitals near the crash site. Police stated that most of the injuries were considered minor.
Sequence of events at the fuel pump
Based on the current state of the investigation, Chen Zhen had tried to overtake another vehicle in the queue at the gas station to reach an available pump more quickly. In the process, he lost control of the car.
The exact reasons for the loss of control were still under investigation. Police officers and technical experts examined the vehicle and the layout of the gas station.
Investigation opened against driver
An investigation was launched against Chen Zhen. Police did not specify at the time of reporting which exact offences were being considered.
Responsibility for the costs of the damage to the KFC branch and the gas station had not yet been clarified. Authorities did not release any further details about the driver’s identity.
Gas station accidents seen as recurring safety issue
Accidents at gas stations caused by driving errors or rushed manoeuvres have been reported regularly in Bangkok. Road safety experts pointed out that confined fuel station premises with high traffic volumes required particular attention.
A public statement from the KFC operator was not available by the time of publication. The branch remained closed following the incident.
