PAK KRET, THAILAND – A black sedan allegedly blocked an ambulance with lights, siren and loudspeaker, triggering public outrage and renewed debate over Thailand’s emergency lane rules.
Dashcam video sparks criticism
On 3 April, dashcam footage showed a black car obstructing the path of an emergency vehicle. The images drew widespread criticism on social media and among road-safety advocates.
The video indicated that the ambulance was responding under emergency conditions while the car ahead reportedly failed to give way as required. The recordings documented repeated attempts by the crew to prompt the driver to move aside.
Response to life-threatening emergency
The incident occurred at the Pak Kret five-way intersection, as an ambulance from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation was dispatched. Its destination was a residential area in Soi Tiwanon–Pak Kret 27.
According to reports, the crew was sent to pick up an elderly patient who was said to be unconscious and in a life-threatening condition. The responders stressed the urgency of the call accordingly.
Rescue workers report deliberate obstruction
Emergency staff stated that the alarm came through the emergency coordination center of Pranangklao Hospital. The ambulance was driving with siren, flashing lights and loudspeaker announcements.
Despite this, the black sedan allegedly slowed down and braked repeatedly, preventing a safe overtaking maneuver. The responders said the vehicle actively blocked their onward progress.
Overtaking attempt on the left – road ahead clear
The video showed how the crew eventually tried to pass on the left after earlier calls to make space had failed. This move reportedly came only after several attempts to persuade the driver to yield.
Reports stated that there were no other vehicles in front of the black sedan at the time that could have impeded its movement. This specific circumstance intensified criticism of the driver’s behavior.
Dangerous delay and calls for consequences
Rescue workers warned that the delay could have put the patient in serious danger. In emergencies, minutes can be decisive, making any obstruction particularly risky.
The case reignited calls for stricter enforcement and more education on the duty to give way immediately to emergency vehicles. At the same time, advocates urged more consistent public awareness campaigns.
Parallels to Pattaya: rescue routes in tourist traffic
Observers compared the incident with similar problems in Pattaya, where rescue teams repeatedly report delayed access. In heavily frequented areas, ambulances encounter dense traffic and inconsistent driving behavior.
Authorities and volunteer rescuers in Pattaya have long warned that poor lane discipline and ignoring sirens pose ongoing dangers. In urban zones and around nightlife areas, traffic conditions can also change rapidly.
Nationwide problem: rules exist, enforcement lags
Road-safety advocates viewed the case as part of a nationwide issue. Although clear rules require motorists to clear the way for emergency vehicles immediately, this is not reliably observed everywhere.
They pointed to major cities and tourist centers such as Bangkok and Pattaya, as well as other heavily visited destinations. The debate therefore focused not only on a single incident but on consistent compliance in everyday traffic.
