PHUKET, THAILAND – Thai immigration police in Phuket arrested a Russian man wanted on an Interpol warrant over large-scale construction fraud.
Russian suspect tracked down in Phuket city center
Thai immigration police in Phuket located the Russian citizen in the downtown area of the tourist island, where he was arrested without incident. He had reportedly fled his homeland aiming to evade criminal proceedings by hiding in Thailand.
Interpol alert triggered local manhunt
According to officials, the Phuket Provincial Immigration Office received an alert from the Department of Foreign Affairs indicating that an Interpol arrest warrant was in force. Investigators immediately launched a search for the fugitive, whose name was not made public.
Alleged construction fraud causing multimillion-baht losses
Police said the detained man was a construction entrepreneur accused of collusion and fraudulent conduct in connection with a building project. The alleged financial damage was reported to exceed 100 million baht (around 2.5 million euros).
Months undercover in the heart of the island
After fleeing Russia, the suspect had been living unnoticed in accommodation in the heart of Phuket. His concealment ended once investigators picked up his trail and began to narrow down his location.
Surveillance operation leads to arrest
Police deployed additional patrol teams and started systematic surveillance to ensure they apprehended the correct man. On 29 January, officers positively identified the suspect in the city center and moved in to detain him.
Visa cancelled and deportation proceedings under way
Authorities immediately annulled his Thai visa following the arrest. The next step, officials said, would be his deportation to Russia, where he was expected to face trial.
Tighter cooperation against international fugitives
Thai officials stressed that the case was not an isolated incident, citing closer cooperation with international law enforcement agencies to prevent the country from becoming a refuge for criminals. Earlier in the month, another Russian national was arrested on Ko Samui over alleged extortion of a car dealership executive in Russia, and a trafficking network run by Uzbek nationals was dismantled in Pattaya.
“We will continue cooperation with Interpol in order to track down and deport fleeing offenders.”
said the immigration police.
Thailand sends warning to foreign offenders
Authorities underlined that Thailand was not a safe hiding place for wanted individuals, pointing to their use of modern databases and rapid responses to international requests. For the arrested Russian, the dream of an anonymous tropical life ended abruptly, replaced by the prospect of return to his homeland and a court case.
Part of a wider fight against cross-border crime
Security officials framed the arrest as another success in the fight against international crime that did not stop at Thailand’s borders. Increasingly, wanted suspects had appeared in tourist hubs, only to be detained once Interpol alerts reached local officers.
