KOH SAMUI, THAILAND – A Russian man wanted for extortion was arrested at a luxury resort on Koh Samui after Thailand’s biometric systems revealed his location.
Russian suspect traced to Thai island
The Russian national Sibgatullin Airat had fled to Thailand to evade the Russian justice system. He and three accomplices were accused of extorting the CEO of a major Russian car dealership group over more than a year. The group allegedly threatened to publish compromising information and demanded over one million rubles, which the victim transferred out of fear.
Biometric checks expose resort hideout
Airat frequently changed accommodation in an effort to avoid detection, but these precautions ultimately failed. The biometric identification system of the Thai Immigration Bureau flagged him at a luxury resort in Bo Phut on Koh Samui, where he had checked in with his girlfriend.
“Our system clearly identified him, despite his attempts to go into hiding.”
said Police Colonel Naruwat Phuttawiro, commander of the Surat Thani Immigration Office.
Arrest by the pool and move to detention
On Thursday, officers surrounded the hotel and arrested the unsuspecting Airat directly at the pool without any resistance. His residence permit was revoked immediately, and formal deportation proceedings were initiated. He was placed in pre-trial detention and awaited removal to Russia, where he would have to answer in court for the extortion allegations and possible additional offenses.
Zero-tolerance approach to foreign offenders
The arrest formed part of a tougher nationwide approach ordered by Police Lieutenant General Phanumat Bunlaksana, commissioner of the Immigration Bureau.
“We will actively track down and arrest criminal foreigners who want to hide in Thailand.”
said Phanumat. Authorities stated they aimed to prevent Thailand from becoming a safe haven for international criminals and had significantly intensified cooperation with foreign law enforcement bodies.
Public urged to report suspicious foreigners
Immigration police called on the public to assist by reporting suspicious activities involving foreigners via the 1178 hotline. Local immigration offices, including the one in Surat Thani at 077-423440, were also named as contact points, with all tips to be treated confidentially. This vigilance was intended to ensure that criminal foreigners no longer felt secure in Thailand.
Technology and cooperation raise pressure
Officials stressed that the case sent a clear signal that a luxury stay on Thai islands offered no immunity from justice. Modern tracking technology and strengthened international cooperation, including close work with Interpol and foreign embassies, made hiding increasingly difficult for wanted offenders. For such fugitives, Thailand was becoming a highly risky refuge, where even a visit to the pool could end in arrest.
