SAMUT SAKHON, Thailand – A Russian motorcyclist slammed into a 10-wheel truck on Rama 2 Road on Sunday and died in hospital. The white Honda Click he rented carried Phuket plates – more than 700 km from the crash site.
He lost his life on the lanes directly opposite Wipharam Hospital. Medics from the Sri Samut Rescue Foundation found him with critical injuries and rushed him to Samut Sakhon Hospital, where he died.
Police trace rental to Phuket
Cops from Mueang Samut Sakhon station quickly traced the Honda Click. It belongs to a rental outfit in Nai Yang, Thalang district on Phuket.
A rental agreement surfaced on the Phuket Times Facebook page on August 3. The document shows the Russian picked up the bike on July 22 at 1pm and was due to return it on August 22. Rent was set at 4,000 baht, plus a 1,000 baht deposit.
Distance stuns social media
The gap between the rental point and the crash site – over 700 km – sparked a buzz online. By bike, the journey usually takes more than 12 hours.
Many users expressed shock at the massive distance. Others warned about the dangers of the busy Rama 2 Road. Police believe he was heading toward Bangkok, but his exact destination remains unclear.
Identity not yet confirmed
The rental document circulating online includes a name, but police have not officially identified the dead man. Officers are working to track down relatives or friends.
Only after notification will steps be taken to send the body back to Russia for burial. The crash investigation continues.
Deadly van crash in March
Sunday’s death echoes a tragedy on March 9 this year. On that day, a van crashed on Thepkasattri Road in Thalang district, Phuket.
A Russian woman died at the scene. Eleven other Russian nationals were injured. They were heading to the Similan Islands in Phang Nga province.
