CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – Moderate rainfall in parts of Omkoi district eased smoke and fine dust from wildfires, while authorities maintained strict monitoring and urged continued reporting of illegal burning.
Rain across several parts of the district
District chief Preechaphon Pooltawee reported that moderate showers fell on 6 May in several areas of Omkoi in Chiang Mai province. The rain affected the area around the district office, parts of Tambon Omkoi, and some locations in Tambon Yang Piang.
According to the district office, the rainfall began at around 2:10 p.m. and was accompanied by thunder. Wind gusts also occurred before the rain eased again at about 2:48 p.m.
No damage reported
In an initial assessment, officials reported no damage from the weather event. Authorities nevertheless continued to monitor conditions in order to detect any follow-on effects at an early stage.
They focused in particular on possible impacts on local communities and forested areas that had recently been affected by fires.
Relief from wildfire smoke and fine dust
The rain helped improve the situation related to wildfires and the concentration of fine dust particles in Omkoi district. A clear reduction in smoke and dust was observed especially in Ban Dong and Ban Lim in Tambon Omkoi, as well as in Ban Pong in Tambon Yang Piang.
Officials viewed the showers as a welcome, if temporary, relief after prolonged air quality problems. They noted that conditions could worsen again if burning activities resumed once the weather turned dry.
Authorities remain vigilant, focus on illegal burning
Despite the easing of the situation, the Omkoi district administration stressed that all relevant bodies should continue to act decisively. This included state agencies and local administrative organisations working closely together.
Their priorities were public information campaigns and intensive monitoring to prevent a renewed escalation through fresh fires. The aim was to ensure that any emerging hotspots could be identified and tackled quickly.
Call for public cooperation
Authorities continued to call on residents to cooperate by reporting suspected illegal forest burning on an ongoing basis. They underlined that community participation was essential to keep air quality from deteriorating again.
The stated goal was to stop fire outbreaks at an early stage and prevent a new surge in smoke and fine dust pollution in Omkoi district.
