SAMUT SAKHON, THAILAND – A gold shop robbery in Krathum Baen ended within minutes when a police officer overpowered the armed suspect whose pistol had malfunctioned. Police later said the man admitted he needed money to pay off gambling debts.
Robbery inside Krathum Baen shopping mall
At 15:30 on Sunday, 28‑year‑old Somphong entered a shopping centre in Krathum Baen, Samut Sakhon, wearing black clothing and carrying a 9mm pistol. Surveillance data confirmed that he moved directly to a gold shop and smashed a display case. Police valued the attempted theft at 55 baht of gold, worth 3,377,000 baht (approximately €84,000).
While aiming his weapon at staff, the magazine of the firearm fell to the ground, disabling the gun. The employees alerted security, triggering a rapid police response inside the mall.
Officer intercepts suspect within minutes
Police Master Sergeant Sukit Kla Songkhram reacted immediately after hearing the alarm.
“I ran directly at the suspect and brought him to the ground.”
said Police Master Sergeant Sukit Kla Songkhram.
The arrest occurred within several minutes, and authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported among staff or bystanders. The robber was detained while still holding one gold necklace.
Gun malfunction prevents escape
Investigators said Somphong broke the display case and tried to fire the pistol during his escape attempt. However, because the magazine had already fallen, the weapon did not discharge. Police described this misstep as the crucial reason the robbery failed.
Confession cites gambling debts
During questioning at Samut Sakhon Provincial Police Station, Somphong, a resident of Nong Khaem District in Bangkok, admitted his motive.
“I needed money for my gambling debts.”

Police confirmed he faced multiple charges connected to armed robbery and possession of a stolen firearm.
Weapon traced to earlier theft
Detectives later confirmed the 9mm pistol had been stolen, prompting an additional investigation. Criminal Captain Phakin Siwamethakul from the Samut Sakhon unit directed the inquiry.
“We are checking whether the suspect acted alone.”
said Criminal Captain Phakin Siwamethakul.
He added that investigators were also reviewing links between the suspect and local gambling circles to identify potential accomplices.
Police commend officer’s quick action
A commander from Samut Sakhon police headquarters stated that without the rapid action of Police Master Sergeant Sukit, the robber might have escaped detection. Local officials publicly praised the officer’s conduct. Sukit declined formal recognition, saying he had only fulfilled his responsibilities.

Authorities concluded that the swift intervention prevented further harm and safeguarded property valued at over three million baht. The investigation into the stolen weapon and any gambling‑related connections remained ongoing.
