PHUKET, THAILAND – A heavy early-morning downpour left large parts of Phuket paralysed as streets turned into rivers, cars stalled in floodwater and emergency crews worked through the day to pump away the rising water.
Patong intersections submerged
In Patong several major junctions were under water, with smaller vehicles unable to pass. Authorities said the Patong Hospital Intersection became nearly impassable for compact cars while only larger vehicles managed to drive through the deep water. At the Patong Hill Junction water levels rose so high that many motorists were forced to stop.
The local police warned motorists to stay away from flooded roads. “If you can, avoid the affected streets,” an officer said, urging people to follow detours and official advice.
Kathu and Kamala hit hard
Kathu and parts of Kamala were also severely affected. The Kathu–Lotus Samkong Road was completely submerged and Soi Nirut in the Kamala subdistrict was under water, hindering normal traffic and daily life.
Firefighters and other responders were at the scene, continuously pumping water from low-lying areas. Officials said their efforts were hampered by continuing rain and high tidal levels that slowed drainage. “We are working around the clock,” a municipal spokesperson added.
Police and traffic control in constant operation
Traffic police were deployed across the island to redirect vehicles, mark dangerous spots and try to prevent accidents on surface that were not only flooded but extremely slippery. Officers advised drivers to reduce speed and exercise caution, and urged residents to remain at home where possible.
Drainage strained by high sea levels
Municipal drainage systems struggled as high sea levels limited the outflow of floodwater, leaving many depressions and streets underwater for hours. City officials said they were focusing resources on keeping key routes clear, but warned that relief would depend on a sustained reduction in rainfall.
Thalang district spared for now
By contrast, the Thalang district reported no flooding and remained dry, offering a temporary relief for northern parts of the island. Authorities said they hoped the dry conditions in Thalang would continue, but cautioned that the overall situation remained unpredictable.
Authorities urge caution and official updates
Local authorities asked residents and visitors to monitor official channels for the latest information and to avoid non-essential travel. They reiterated that emergency services were stretched and that everyone should follow instructions from police and relief teams.
