PATTAYA, THAILAND – Pattaya nightlife operators are calling for closer collaboration with the private sector and concrete steps to strengthen tourism from the future mayor. The Pattaya Nightlife Operators Association is demanding, among other things, an extension of closing hours from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM in entertainment zones and a revision of zoning regulations, a topic of focus shortly before the elections on June 28, 2026.
Nightlife Industry Demands Later Closing Hours
The association proposes shifting the current closing time of 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM wherever designated as an entertainment zone. Operators justify this by citing the behavior of international tourists and a desire to boost the city’s economic activity.
Lisa Hamilton, President of the Pattaya Nightlife Operators Association, conveyed the demand on behalf of club and bar owners. She emphasized that the adjustment should occur in designated zones and not be applied uniformly without regulation.
Zoning Regulations to Be Adapted to City Growth
The association is requesting a review and update of zoning regulations for entertainment venues, as many rules from previous years no longer reflect current city development. The goal is to create legal clarity and open up more legal perspectives for operators.
As an example, the group cited Jomtien, where hundreds of bars exist, but large parts are formally not entertainment zones and have only received temporary extended opening hours. Therefore, operators are demanding a permanent solution instead of temporary exceptions.
Appeal to the Next Mayor
Operators are calling for a mayor who understands business realities, listens actively, and works closely with the private sector.
“Previous collaboration allowed us to effectively communicate problems to the city administration,”
said Hamilton.
Hamilton explicitly added her expectations of the successor:
“We hope that the new mayor, regardless of who is elected, will continue this close partnership to ensure the smooth development of the city and its tourism industry.”
Elections on June 28 and the Candidates
The mayoral and city council elections in Pattaya are scheduled for June 28, 2026. Among the known candidates are incumbent Poramese Ngampichet, Itthiwat Wattanasaathorn of the People’s Party, and independent contender Sakchai Tangho; two additional candidates, whose names were not mentioned, are also running.
Concrete political decisions currently lie with the future head of the city and the new council, hence no immediate measures have been announced yet. The industry hopes for swift discussions after the election.
Previous Relaxations and the Next Step
Pattaya has previously benefited from national pilot regulations that allowed opening hours until 4:00 AM in certain areas, which operators deemed stimulating for the nocturnal economy. The now-demanded extension to 6:00 AM and the formal adjustment of zones are intended to further support this development.
