PATTAYA, THAILAND – A three-day “Pattaya Countdown 2026” festival turned the city’s beachfront into a densely packed event zone starting on 29 December.
Officials open year-end festival on beachfront
The event was officially opened by Wittaya Khunpluem, president of the Chonburi Provincial Administration. At his side stood Poramet Ngampichet, mayor of Pattaya, who joined numerous Thai and international tourists for the start of the year-end celebrations. The atmosphere was lively from the outset as the beach area filled quickly, with organisers aiming to position Pattaya as a world-class tourist destination and attract visitors from as many segments as possible.
Heavy traffic and large-scale security deployment
The influx of visitors led to major traffic disruptions on access roads into the city, especially along Beach Road. Traffic backed up over long stretches as the festival zone drew increasing crowds. To ensure safety over the New Year holidays, the city deployed around 600 police officers, tasked with preventing crime, managing visitor flows and securing the event areas.
Tourism promotion and economic impact
Authorities stated that the reinforced police presence was intended to safeguard both visitors and local residents. The Pattaya Countdown 2026 was explicitly designed as a tool to promote tourism, with the city administration seeking to further improve the quality of its tourism offerings and generate additional income for local businesses, the private sector and the wider population. According to the organisers, the event was also meant to strengthen Pattaya’s image as an internationally known holiday destination and establish the countdown as a permanent New Year’s tradition.
Concert programme and festival marketplace
During the three festival days from 29 to 31 December 2025 (2568 in the Buddhist calendar), numerous concerts by well-known national artists were scheduled. More than 600 vendor stalls offered a wide range of goods and food to make the stay more attractive for visitors. On the opening night, a packed main-stage programme included acts such as PiXXiE, PERSES, VIIS, THX, 4EVE, Jeff Satur and BUS because of you i shine, with the city administration targeting a young, music-oriented audience and promoting the beach zone as the central stage for the turn of the year.
Dazzling drone show as a highlight
A highlight of the evening was a show featuring more than 850 drones, which formed images and lettering in the sky above the coast. The performance drew a strong response from the audience, with many visitors expressing their admiration for the spectacle. Organisers interpreted the reactions as confirmation of their concept of using modern technology as a visual symbol of the New Year transition.
Debate over benefits and local strain
The event once again filled Pattaya’s streets, hotels and beaches, underscoring the city’s role as a New Year’s stage. At the same time, the festival raised questions over where festive atmosphere ends and traffic chaos, safety risks and pressure on residents begin. Public discussion focused on whether the countdown is an indispensable tourism driver or whether Pattaya needs new concepts for more sustainable large-scale events.
