PHUKET, THAILAND – A well-organised theft ring targeted a leather goods shop in a Patong shopping mall, with four foreign suspects captured on CCTV carrying out a coordinated distraction.
Distraction tactic caught on CCTV
Around 8 p.m. on 17 November, four foreigners entered a leather goods shop in the The Botanica shopping centre in Patong. CCTV footage showed what investigators described as a carefully executed distraction. A man in a white shirt spoke directly to the cashier to keep her occupied, while his three accomplices searched the shelves.
Women accused of concealing stolen items
“Two women were caught stealing,”
said the shop owner. One allegedly placed products into a paper bag, while another reportedly hid two items behind her mobile phone. After taking the goods, the women immediately left the shop, followed shortly by the two men, and the group remained at large.
Wallets and card holders missing
The owner confirmed the loss of wallets and card holders, though the exact value of the stolen merchandise was not disclosed. CCTV recordings were passed to the Facebook page Newshawk Phuket in an effort to warn other business owners in the province. Police continued to search for the four-person group and called for information from the public.
Suspect named by hotel worker
A massage salon employee in the same mall recognised the group, saying they had already used the salon’s services around 6 p.m. that evening. A Thai man believed to work at the suspects’ hotel identified the man in the white shirt as Omar Youssef.
“Youssef was demanding and caused a scene after he was refused a refund for breakfast,”
said the hotel employee, adding that he had wanted the breakfast to be served in the afternoon.
Nationality claims unconfirmed
On social media, initial claims circulated about the suspects’ nationality, with one Facebook user alleging they were Jordanian citizens. Police had not confirmed this information and reported no arrests so far. The man identified as Youssef and his alleged accomplices remained under investigation.
Similar theft reported the previous day
A day earlier, a similar theft was reported in Phuket, where a foreign man was caught on CCTV stealing a pair of sunglasses with pink lenses worth 199 baht (about 5 euros). Footage showed him trying on several models, placing one pair on an upper shelf and later slipping it into his trouser pocket. This suspect also remained at large, and the series of thefts in Phuket shopping centres appeared unlikely to be a coincidence.
