CHON BURI, Thailand – Chevron Thailand has launched a groundbreaking 35-meter trimaran, the ‘Uniwise Commander,’ set to revolutionize crew transport to offshore oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Thailand.
The new vessel, the first trimaran of its kind to be used for personnel transport in Thailand’s oil and gas industry, can carry up to 90 workers. It promises faster, more stable, and comfortable journeys to sea, slashing travel times by an estimated 30 percent.
This innovation is a direct response to the challenging conditions in the Gulf, where high waves and strong winds often push conventional crew boats to their limits. The trimaran design offers a significant advantage in combating these elements.
Three Hulls Against Waves and Wind
The trimaran’s design, featuring three hulls, is engineered to provide superior stability and performance in rough seas. This multi-hull configuration dramatically reduces the impact of waves and wind, making the transit smoother for the crew.
The improved stability is expected to decrease instances of seasickness among workers. This enhancement addresses a common issue faced by personnel during offshore assignments, contributing to overall well-being.
90 Passengers, 32 Knots – What the Boat Can Do
The Uniwise Commander is capable of transporting up to 90 oil workers per trip. Operating at speeds between 32 and 34 knots, it services all three production facilities: Benchamas, North Pailin, and South Pailin.
Its advanced design includes a hydrofoil system to reduce water resistance and a water jet propulsion system for exceptional maneuverability. The semi-SWATH hull design effectively dampens wave impact, ensuring safe transfers to platforms.
30 Percent Travel Time Savings: How It Works
The significant reduction in travel time is achieved through a combination of advanced technologies. The hydrofoil system lifts the hull partially out of the water at speed, reducing drag.
The water jet propulsion system allows for precise control and agility, even in challenging maritime conditions. This technological integration means that average journey times are cut by approximately 30 percent.
Consecration with Buddhist Rites
Chevron, the shipping company Uniwise Offshore, and the shipyard Marsun held a christening ceremony for the vessel at Chuk Samet Pier. Buddhist rituals were performed as part of the handover.
During the event, Lt. Surachet Kangwanwanich, Co-Head of Uniwise Offshore, described the Uniwise Commander as a “significant milestone and great pride for all three involved companies.” He highlighted the project as a collaborative learning process focused on the effective and efficient application of technology.

Chatit Huayhongtong, President of Chevron Thailand, emphasized that innovation is a core principle for the company, not merely a public relations statement. He stated that Chevron continuously develops and applies technology to improve its operations.
He further commented that the new trimaran reflects this approach by using advanced maritime technology to elevate operational standards, protect the workforce, and contribute to Thailand’s long-term energy security.
Marsun: Thailand’s Shipbuilding Shows Itself Globally
Marsun’s CEO, Patrawin Chongvisal, noted his shipyard’s 46 years of experience in building high-performance vessels for naval, coast guard, and offshore clients. He expressed pride in delivering Thailand’s first trimaran crew transport for the offshore energy sector.
He stated that the project demonstrated world-class Thai engineering prowess, setting new benchmarks for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The collaboration with Chevron, Uniwise, and WIND Naval Architects showcased the capabilities of the domestic shipbuilding industry.
First Crew Voyages from End of July
The Uniwise Commander is scheduled to commence regular operations to the Benchamas, North Pailin, and South Pailin facilities by the end of July. Final navigation tests are currently underway.
Industry partners expressed high confidence that the new vessel will usher in a completely new level of efficiency for offshore personnel transportation. The company is seeking public opinion on this development.
