CHON BURI, THAILAND – Chevron Thailand has unveiled a new trimaran designed to revolutionize crew transport to offshore oil rigs.
The 35-meter-long trimaran, named the “Uniwise Commander,” was presented at Chuk Samet Port. This vessel is set to fundamentally change crew transport to offshore drilling islands in the Gulf of Thailand. It can carry up to 90 workers more quickly, stably, and comfortably to their offshore workplaces, reducing travel time by 30 percent. This innovation marks a significant step forward in enhancing operational efficiency and personnel welfare in the offshore energy sector.
Three Hulls Against Waves and Wind
The new boat is the first trimaran to be deployed for personnel transport in Thailand’s oil and gas industry. Chevron is responding to the harsh conditions in the Gulf, where high waves and strong winds often push conventional crew boats to their limits. The multi-hull design enhances stability and performance in challenging seas.

90 Passengers, 32 Knots – What the Boat Can Do
The Uniwise Commander can transport up to 90 oil workers per trip. With an operational speed of 32 to 34 knots and a range covering all three production facilities – Benchamas, North Pailin, and South Pailin – it replaces slower predecessor boats. The three-hull design provides increased deck space and stability.
Personnel transfers remain safe even in wave heights up to 2.5 meters. A night vision camera system also enables trips in darkness and poor visibility. The vessel’s enhanced stability and speed aim to minimize crew fatigue and improve overall safety during transit.
30 Percent Travel Time Savings: How It Works
The speed advantage is not solely due to more powerful engines. A hydrofoil system reduces water resistance, while a waterjet propulsion system ensures extreme maneuverability. The semi-SWATH hull design dampens wave impact, protecting personnel during transfers to platforms. This innovative combination of design and propulsion technology is key to the improved performance.
In practice, this means the average journey time is reduced by approximately 30 percent. For the crews, this translates to less exhaustion on the outward journey and more rest on the return trip – a clear safety gain. This reduction in travel time contributes to better crew well-being and readiness.
Consecration with Buddhist Rites
Chevron, the shipping company Uniwise Offshore, and the shipyard Marsun gathered for the ceremonial naming at Chuk Samet Pier in Chon Buri. Buddhist ceremonies accompanied the handover before guests were allowed to board the ship for initial navigation tests. The event highlighted the collaborative spirit of the project.

Marsun CEO Patrawin Chongvisal recalled his shipyard’s 46 years of experience with high-performance ships for naval, coastguard, and offshore clients. He expressed pride in delivering Thailand’s first trimaran crew transport ship for the offshore energy sector. This achievement highlights the shipyard’s capability and contribution to the industry.
The project demonstrates world-class Thai engineering and sets benchmarks for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The collaboration with Chevron, Uniwise, and WIND Naval Architects showcased the potential of the domestic shipbuilding industry. First Crew Journeys from End of July
The Uniwise Commander is scheduled to begin regular operations to the Benchamas, North Pailin, and South Pailin facilities by the end of July. Final navigation tests are ongoing until then. All partners are confident that the new vessel will elevate offshore personnel transport to an entirely new level of efficiency.
