BANGKOK, THAILAND – A motorbike taxi driver was shot dead at a stand in Huai Khwang district on Monday morning, and a suspected former municipal employee surrendered to police the same day.
Driver killed at Huai Khwang motorbike stand
The shooting occurred on the morning of 26 January 2026 at a taxi stand in Ratchada Soi 10, near the entrance to Soi Prachasanti 11-2 in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district. Around 9 a.m., Huai Khwang police received a report of gunfire resulting in a death and responded with forensic officers and rescue workers.
Victim found dead at the scene
At the stand, officers found the body of a motorbike taxi driver identified as Mr Toonjai (surname withheld), who was still seated on a chair at his post. According to police, he had suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, which was cordoned off extensively for evidence collection.
Long-running dispute between suspect and victim
Initial investigations focused on Mr Chu, a former employee of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Witnesses stated there had been repeated verbal arguments between the suspect and the victim in the past.
Eyewitnesses reported that on the morning of the shooting, the driver had first eaten at a nearby food stall before returning to the stand to wait for passengers. Shortly afterwards, the suspect allegedly arrived on a motorcycle from his home in the same alley and spoke to the driver, leading to a heated argument before he went back to his residence.
Shots fired at close range
A short time later, the suspect reportedly returned with a firearm, while the driver remained seated on the chair at the taxi stand. Witnesses told police that the man then fired two shots at the victim’s head from close range and fled back to his apartment.
“He aimed directly at him, then he immediately ran away.”
said unnamed eyewitnesses, according to police briefings cited by Khaosod.
Evidence collection and suspect’s surrender
Police secured the crime scene, collected evidence and began reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings to reconstruct the sequence of events. Later in the day, the suspect’s son contacted authorities and persuaded his father to give himself up.
“The suspect surrendered voluntarily after discussions with family members.”
said investigators, according to police sources.
The accused was taken into custody and brought to Huai Khwang Police Station for questioning, where investigators said he was being held.
Ongoing investigation and legal steps
Police opened a case over the fatal shooting and prepared further criminal proceedings. Investigators stated that inquiries into the motive, the detailed history of the dispute and the origin of the weapon were continuing.
According to police, the case was being handled by Huai Khwang station, with more information on the progress of the proceedings expected after initial interviews were completed.
