PATTAYA, THAILAND – Soaring Songkran crowds turned Walking Street into a packed festival corridor as security forces tightened control and congestion spread to the nearby Bali Hai Pier.
Walking Street becomes Songkran hotspot
By the evening of 13 April, Walking Street was filled shoulder to shoulder with Thai and international visitors celebrating Songkran at full intensity. The party zone stretched well into the night as people converged on the city’s most famous nightlife strip.
Armed with water pistols and dressed in festival-appropriate clothing, many revellers transformed the street into a high-energy water festival area. The scene underscored Pattaya’s reputation as a focal point for Songkran celebrations.
Music, neon and non-stop activity
Loud music, glowing neon lights and constant movement shaped the atmosphere and kept the festive mood high until well after midnight. Visitors moved only slowly through the dense crowd, often pausing for water fights along the way.
Participants joined spontaneous games, sprayed water and soaked in the tightly packed festival feeling. The combination of nightlife venues and street parties kept activity levels elevated deep into the night.
More security at key points
Along Walking Street, the presence of police and other officials was clearly increased, with officers stationed at key points. Their task was to monitor the flow of people, maintain order and safeguard public safety despite the heavy influx of visitors.
Authorities focused on keeping movement as smooth as possible in the most congested sections. The visible deployment reflected concerns about managing such concentrated crowds in narrow urban spaces.
Traffic crunch at Bali Hai Pier
Pressure did not build up only on Walking Street. At the nearby Bali Hai Pier, severe congestion developed as large numbers of travellers passed through.
Many visitors were heading to nearby islands such as Koh Larn, while others were returning from day trips. The strong island traffic added to the overall strain on Pattaya’s transport infrastructure during the holiday period.
Why Pattaya draws Songkran crowds
The steady influx highlighted Pattaya’s strong pull during Songkran, especially in nightlife areas where celebrations often ran late. These zones acted as magnets for both domestic and foreign tourists.
Hot and humid weather also encouraged many people to stay outdoors after sunset and carry the daytime energy into the night. The climate conditions made water-based festivities particularly appealing.
Outlook: Wan Lai expected to draw even bigger masses
With the Wan Lai celebrations scheduled for 18–19 April, even larger crowds were expected in Pattaya. The city braced for what was likely to be the peak of the extended Songkran season.
Authorities anticipated several more days of intensive festivities, which traditionally stretched over multiple dates. Questions remained about which measures would matter most for managing major crowds, including enhanced security, improved traffic control and clearer rules for designated festival zones.
