Massive Drug Haul Seized in Nong Khai

Security forces in northeast Thailand intercepted over a ton of narcotics in a single pickup truck

NONG KHAI, THAILAND – Security forces in northeast Thailand intercepted a pickup truck carrying more than a ton of narcotics destined for the south of the country.

Pickup stopped with over a ton of drugs

Security units from the Surasak Montri Task Force stopped a suspicious Nissan Navara on Highway 212 in Nong Khai in the early hours of 5 December 2025. Inside the vehicle, officers found 22 sacks containing 889 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine packed in bags printed with tea brands. Five more sacks held 200 kilograms of ketamine, professionally stowed in the truck bed, with the total haul valued at 150.46 million baht.

Shocking find of tiger skin amid narcotics

Between the piles of drugs, officers discovered a large tiger skin, described as a macabre addition to the load. The find cast a harsh light on the links between drug cartels and the illegal wildlife trade, which often form part of the same criminal syndicates’ portfolio. The 28-year-old driver, identified as Khomsan, was arrested and was said to have been transporting the cargo alone from the border toward the south.

Intelligence-led operation along the Mekong

The seizure was not a coincidence, as Border Surveillance Unit 21 and a special intelligence team had gathered precise information in advance. They knew that between 1 and 5 December a major shipment was to be smuggled across the Mekong from a neighboring country. All available forces from the military, police, customs and provincial administration were placed on highest alert along the suspected transport routes.

Shipment bound for southern markets and tourist hubs

According to initial questioning of the driver, the massive consignment was destined for the south of Thailand. From there, the drugs were reportedly to be distributed to tourist centers and local markets, where the social damage would have been immense. The driver, however, gave only scant information, and investigators were working to identify the entire network and those behind it.

Major victory in a never-ending drug war

Authorities described the confiscation as one of the biggest successes in the region in recent months, underlining the effectiveness of coordinated action by multiple agencies. At the same time, officers acknowledged that for every intercepted shipment, many more were believed to be moving through the country, making the fight against the drug mafia a never-ending war. Investigations were being expanded to determine the source of the drugs and dismantle the routes across the green border.

Open questions over long-term impact

The case raised broader questions about whether such large-scale seizures were enough to disrupt entrenched trafficking routes. One shipment, one driver and a network apparently reaching deep into the country illustrated both the scale of the trade and the challenge facing the state. The discovery of the tiger skin also highlighted the ruthless breadth of the business, linking narcotics to the exploitation of endangered wildlife.
