BANGKOK, THAILAND – An international aviation audit reported significant improvements in Thailand’s air security standards, strengthening the country’s position as a major tourism hub.
ICAO audit exceeded expectations
From 4 to 8 November, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) carried out its Universal Security Audit Programme in Thailand, and the outcome surpassed expectations. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT),
“The ICAO auditors provided preliminary feedback showing that Thailand has demonstrated substantial improvements in its aviation security oversight standards.”
said CAAT.
Wide-ranging review of critical systems
The inspectors examined all critical areas, from legislation and airport security to passenger controls. The audit covered the legal framework, training systems and quality control, leaving no part of the security regime unreviewed.
Focus on airports, passengers and cybersecurity
Particular attention was given to airport security measures, flight operations, passenger and baggage screening, and protection against unlawful interference. Even cybersecurity was assessed, underscoring the broad modernisation of Thailand’s aviation security system.
Multiple agencies worked together
All key agencies took part in the audit, including the Royal Thai Police, the immigration authority and the customs department. The National Security Council and the Counter-Terrorism Operations Centre also cooperated, alongside the National Cyber Security Agency.
Cooperation impressed international auditors
Airports and airlines coordinated closely throughout the inspection. This high level of cooperation across organisations left a lasting impression on the international auditors.
