BANGKOK, Thailand – A leading virologist warns that a hepatitis A wave is approaching eastern Thailand. Young people are particularly at risk because they lack natural immunity.
Young Generation in Great Danger
Professor Yong of Chulalongkorn University is issuing an urgent warning. The number of infections is rising earlier than usual.
People over 60 are mostly immune due to past infection. Those under 40 almost completely lack protection – only vaccination helps.
Insidious Route of Infection
The virus is transmitted through contaminated food or water. Particularly insidious: the source is often difficult to trace.
The expert suspects outbreaks in large workplaces with many employees in close quarters. Hand washing after using the toilet is crucial – especially in kitchens and canteens.
Raw Seafood as a Risk
Oysters and cockles can also carry the virus. They live in seawater and accumulate the pathogens while feeding.
The virus is only safely killed at temperatures above 85 degrees Celsius. Brief blanching is not enough – the food must be thoroughly cooked.
Concern Over New Wave of Illness
Normally the hepatitis A season begins with the rainy season. Now it is already occurring in the hot season. This worries experts.
“A hepatitis A infection usually occurs only once in a lifetime, after which immunity is permanent.”
said Professor Yong, virologist.
