An Elephant Calf Left to Fate After Heartbreaking Maternal Decision
There is distress and heartbreak beneath the tangled canopies of Thailand’s Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, where a newborn female elephant, a mere day old, has become the focus of an emotional battle for survival. The tiny calf, affectionately named “Khao Tom,” faces a desperate fight for life after her mother, out of pure instinct, abandoned her in the wild.
On the afternoon of September 21, at precisely 2:30pm, Khao Tom drew her first breath. But as quickly as joy arrived, tragedy struck. Her mother, a 20-year-old elephant called “Mae Suksant,” recognized that her newborn was heartbreakingly too frail to keep up with the migrating herd.
With a heavy heart, Mae Suksant made the ultimate sacrifice and pressed onward with the group, making her way toward the Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, leaving little Khao Tom helpless and alone.
Elephant expert Prathom Han Klang shed light on this cold reality. “Mother elephants will abandon calves if they sense those calves are too weak to endure the pressures of migration,” he explained. “Though a natural survival mechanism for the herd, it is often a deadly sentence for the forsaken calf.”
Rangers, Monks, and Villagers Rush for a Miracle
The next day, September 22, local villagers stumbled upon the fragile youngster in the remote forests near Huai Suea Village. Realising the urgent danger, a large-scale rescue operation was launched. Park rangers, Buddhist monks, community volunteers, and elephant watchers all joined forces, led by Lam Khlong Ngu’s head, Akkanit Klangpraphan.
The infant, now dubbed “Khao Tom”—meaning “rice porridge”—was swiftly transferred to the Forest Protection Unit for critical care. An examination revealed her harrowing condition: Khao Tom was so weak and injured that she could not even rise to her feet, her right hind leg wounded and useless beneath her.
Battling to Keep a Fragile Life Alive
Every moment is a struggle. Despite bleak odds, the rescue team is fighting against time and fate to give Khao Tom a fighting chance. Support has come from far and wide, with Kanchana Silpa-archa, advisor to the Chartthaipattana Party, securing a supply of specially formulated elephant baby formula from the Wang Chang Lae Paniat Elephant Camp in Ayutthaya.
The care regime is intense and precise. Round the clock, every few hours, Khao Tom is gently bottle-fed 600-700 ml of milk or rice formula. At 3:00am she managed to consume 300 ml—a positive sign for her digestion and strength, say the caregivers.
Every drop must be kept in strict hygienic conditions and delivered at the perfect temperature to avoid any infection or set-back.
First Signs of Hope Amid Uncertainty
Against all the odds, glimmers of hope are surfacing. Khao Tom has begun to sit independently and now attempts—again and again—to prop herself upright. Yet her wounded hind leg still refuses to bear her warmth and weight.
The veterinarians are working on a specialised recovery regime, hopeful that with time and care, Khao Tom may one day stand and perhaps even walk.
Her struggle has highlighted the relentless difficulties facing wildlife conservation in Thailand. When nature’s harsh judgments threaten vulnerable animals, it often falls to dedicated humans to step in and try to tip the scales toward mercy.
But no one can say for certain if Khao Tom will survive the week, let alone the wild.
A New Life in Human Hands Awaits—If She Survives
If this courageous little elephant beats the odds, her life will inevitably be entwined with humans from here on. Orphaned calves like Khao Tom, who never learn essential herd behaviour, rarely have any chance of being released back into the wild.
For now, though, the mission is sheer survival—a fight measured in every drop of milk, every sleepless hour, and every ounce of hope clung to by her rescuers.
The fate of Khao Tom remains uncertain, but the world is watching and hoping for a miracle in the heart of the Thai jungle.
