KO PHA-NGAN, THAILAND – A 22-year-old German man wanted by Interpol for armed extortion in Germany was arrested on the resort island of Ko Pha-Ngan after local residents complained about his reckless and noisy motorcycle rides through residential areas.
Noise complaints expose a fugitive
According to officers from the Surat Thani Provincial Police, repeated public complaints described a foreign motorcyclist driving without a license plate and using a modified exhaust system along island roads. Police patrols recorded his dangerous maneuvers, including slalom movements and overtaking across solid lines.
“We have precisely documented his irresponsible behavior,”
said Pol. Lt. Col. Winich Boonchit, who directed the pursuit.
The suspect, identified as Sukru, was intercepted at a local coin-operated car wash on Ko Pha-Ngan, where officers managed to stop and question him.
Interpol warrant confirmed
During identification and document checks at the scene, police confirmed through the Interpol database that 22-year-old Sukru was wanted in Germany for armed extortion. Thailand’s tourist police found a metal knuckle weapon in his shoulder bag along with personal documents.
“He confessed immediately to the crime committed in Germany,”
said a police spokesman after the interrogation at the island station.
Investigators confirmed that the suspect had fled Germany soon after the alleged offense and entered Thailand on a tourist visa, staying on the island for several weeks before drawing attention with his motorcycle.
Police cooperation and extradition process
Pol. Lt. Col. Winich Boonchit personally led the arrest operation and secured both the motorcycle and weapon as evidence. Coordination has since begun with German law enforcement authorities to arrange the suspect’s extradition.
Tourist Police Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-arm announced enhanced operations against fugitives found in tourist destinations, emphasizing cooperation between Thai and foreign authorities.
“We will intensify the hunt for foreign criminals,”
said Pol. Lt. Gen. Saksira Phueak-arm, Tourist Police Commissioner.
Charges in Thailand and onward extradition
The Thai police charged the suspect under national law for reckless driving and possession of a prohibited weapon, in addition to the active German arrest warrant. The extradition process is ongoing since coordination was initiated between the Tourist Police Bureau and Interpol Bangkok Office.
Authorities increase oversight on tourist behavior
The Royal Thai Police stated that similar operations will continue across southern islands during the upcoming high travel season, focusing on background checks and enforcement of road regulations.
The arrest of the young fugitive on Ko Pha-Ngan demonstrates joint law enforcement mechanisms and the risks faced by wanted persons attempting to hide among foreign tourist communities.
