EUROPE, INT – A record-shattering heatwave is consuming Europe, pushing temperatures to unprecedented highs and tragically claiming hundreds of lives.

Europe continues to bake under an unprecedented heatwave, with temperature records falling daily. The death toll has climbed to nearly 400 people, while approximately 150 million individuals are currently exposed to temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.
On Saturday, a new all-time German temperature record was set in Möckern-Drewitz, Saxony-Anhalt, reaching an unbearable 41.5 degrees Celsius. This surpassed the previous day’s record of 41.3 degrees set in Saarbrücken.
Germany is groaning under the intense heat. German politician Katrin Göring-Eckardt stated on platform X,
“This heat is not pleasant summer weather, but a health crisis.”
In Berlin, police deployed two water cannons to offer citizens some relief with a water mist.

Further east, new records are also being broken. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute reported 40.8 degrees Celsius from the Doksany station north of Prague, marking a historical high for the country. The extreme heat now has Eastern Europe firmly in its grip.
The country’s weather authorities are observing the situation with great concern. Temperatures are far above the usual for the region, placing a severe strain on infrastructure and the healthcare system.

Even in the typically cooler north of Europe, people are struggling. Odum, near Aarhus in Denmark, provisionally measured 37 degrees. This broke the old record of 36.4 degrees from 1976, which had stood for nearly half a century.
The heatwave is relentlessly spreading north, demonstrating that no one in Europe is safe from the extreme temperatures. Switzerland in Basel also experienced its third consecutive June record with 39 degrees.

“This unusual heatwave is caused by a slow-moving and persistent high-pressure system, referred to as a ‘heat dome’,”
explained Ben Rich, chief meteorologist at the BBC. Under this system, sinking air compresses and heats up like in an oven.
Rich added,
“Furthermore, the sky remains largely cloudless, allowing the scorching sun to freely radiate, pushing temperatures even higher.”
An end to this dangerous weather situation is not currently in sight.

The toll is becoming increasingly alarming. Since the beginning of the heatwave, the number of drownings in France among those seeking to cool off in the water has risen to at least 55. Two-thirds of these tragic accidents occurred at unsupervised swimming spots.
The World Meteorological Organization warns of serious consequences for health and ecosystems. The heat is not only causing direct fatalities but also provoking risky behavior.

The situation is particularly dramatic on the Iberian Peninsula, where the wave initially began. Spain’s health monitoring system, MoMo, registered 327 deaths between Sunday, June 21st, and the previous Thursday, all linked to the hot weather.
Combined with the drownings in France and other victims across Europe, the total death toll is approaching the shocking figure of 400. And the heatwave shows no signs of abating.
