PHUKET, THAILAND – An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to Phuket encountered severe turbulence shortly before landing, triggering a full emergency response but leaving all passengers without serious injury.
Severe turbulence on final approach
At around 11:30 a.m. on 14 January, Etihad flight EY416 from Abu Dhabi was on final approach to Phuket when the aircraft suddenly shook violently with 160 people on board. The plane dropped into a powerful air pocket, leaving passengers in what witnesses described as minutes of pure fear. Cabin crew had to brace themselves as screams were heard throughout the cabin.
“It felt as if the floor was being pulled away from under us. Everything flew through the air,”
said an unnamed, visibly shaken passenger.
Airport emergency plan activated
Initial reports from on board indicated several possible injuries, prompting air traffic control to alert Phuket International Airport immediately. Even before the aircraft touched down, emergency teams and multiple ambulances were placed on high alert. Airport director Monchai Tanode personally coordinated the large-scale response, activating all standard procedures for a potential emergency.
Tense but safe landing
At 11:51 a.m. the aircraft finally landed safely on the runway under the watchful eyes of assembled rescue crews. After initial checks at the aircraft and an announcement to those on board, the feared worst-case scenario did not materialise. Relief spread as it became clear the situation was under control.
All 160 passengers unharmed
Around 12:00 p.m., airport director Monchai issued the all-clear.
“The aircraft has landed safely. No passenger requires hospital treatment.”
said Monchai, airport director.
All 160 passengers were able to leave the aircraft on their own and continue on to their accommodations. For many, the experience remained a major shock, but they escaped without serious physical consequences.
Why clear-air turbulence is so dangerous
Turbulence was described as a normal part of flying, but severe clear-air turbulence, as was likely in this case, was noted as particularly treacherous. It cannot be predicted by pilots and can occur suddenly in clear skies. Passengers without a fastened seat belt risk serious injury if they are thrown against the ceiling or seats.

The crew of flight EY416 had apparently instructed passengers to fasten their seat belts in time before the incident. The episode was highlighted as a strong reminder that passengers should keep their belt fastened whenever they are seated. According to the account, this simple rule remains one of the most important safety measures on board.
