PHATTHALUNG, THAILAND – A couple on their way to a funeral died after their motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck and burst into flames on a main road in southern Thailand.
Motorcycle engulfed in flames after collision
The crash occurred at about 9 a.m. on 6 December 2025 on Phetkasem Road in Moo 11, Tha Khae, when a white Isuzu D-Max pickup travelling south collided head-on with a motorcycle. Emergency responders arrived to find a Honda Wave motorcycle fully ablaze and had to extinguish the fire before reaching the victims. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle was left completely destroyed and charred.
Elderly couple succumbed to severe injuries
The 70-year-old Narong was found lifeless on the roadway, and rescuers could not revive him. His 64-year-old wife, Somjit, was discovered with critical injuries, prompting immediate CPR by paramedics. She was rushed at high speed to Phatthalung Hospital, but doctors there were unable to save her, and she died shortly afterwards from severe internal injuries.
On the way to a funeral ceremony
Relatives told police that the couple had been riding to a funeral to pay their last respects to Narong’s brother at a temple in Na Not. They had been coming from a small side street and were returning to the main road.
“They came from the side street and wanted to enter Phetkasem Road. Maybe they moved unexpectedly into the pickup’s lane,”
said a relative, who believed that this brief moment of re-entering the road proved fatal for them.
Police gathering evidence on cause of crash
Local police launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, focusing in particular on questioning the driver of the Isuzu pickup. He was initially interviewed at the scene and is expected to give further statements. Officers were also searching the surrounding area for video surveillance footage to clarify how the collision unfolded, with one investigator stating:
“We are collecting all the evidence before drawing a final conclusion.”
said an investigator.
Community in shock over rare double fatality
Residents in Tha Khae were deeply shaken by the deadly crash, which they said was unusual even on the busy Phetkasem Road. Witnesses and locals said the images of the burning motorcycle would stay with them for a long time, viewing the double tragedy as another stark reminder of the dangers on Thailand’s roads. What began as a routine ride for two pensioners ended in death within seconds, leaving their family to mourn the loss of two relatives at once.
