KOH PHANGAN, THAILAND – Thai police on the popular party island arrested three suspects in a cocaine raid that investigators said pointed to an organised drug network.
Police raid on party island
The Thai police on Koh Phangan carried out a major operation against what they described as international drug trafficking and detained three suspects: a Canadian man, a Nigerian man and a Thai woman. Officers seized cocaine and equipment used for drug consumption during the raid. Investigators said the case underlined that criminal activity continued behind the resort island’s beaches.
Routine check leads to first arrest
Police conducting routine checks in the Ban Tai area stopped a foreign man who appeared nervous on his motorbike. He was identified as Kanan Abdulsalam, 40, from Canada, and officers found two packages of cocaine hidden in stainless steel containers in his sleeves. A search of his mobile phone uncovered chat messages arranging drug sales through a messaging app.
Evidence found in apartment
During a search of his apartment, officers discovered crystal meth consumption devices and a digital scale. According to police, Abdulsalam admitted he had bought the drugs from a Nigerian man and a Thai woman in order to resell them.
“Drug dealing will in no way be tolerated, not even on party islands,”
said police authorities.
Controlled buy brings in second and third suspects
After the confession, police organised a controlled drug deal to reach further suspects. A white sedan arrived at the handover point carrying the next two alleged dealers: John Chukwudi Ukadike, 43, from Nigeria, and his Thai wife Mintra. Officers searched the vehicle and found cocaine wrapped in black tape and hidden beneath the driver’s side, along with various items they said indicated drug trafficking.
Charges against alleged network
Investigators viewed the findings as clear signs of an organised network operating on the island. Abdulsalam was charged with possession of cocaine for sale, drug use and driving under the influence of drugs. Ukadike and Mintra faced charges of jointly selling cocaine for commercial purposes, with an additional drug use charge laid against Ukadike.
Ongoing investigation and tourist warning
Police stated that this was only the first blow against a wider operation and transferred the trio to Koh Phangan police station while inquiries into additional suspects continued. Authorities used the case to warn visitors that Thailand enforces strict drug laws and that anyone caught with cocaine risks long prison sentences.
“The question remains: How deep does the drug empire on Koh Phangan really go?”
said investigators.
Networks in focus beyond big cities
According to police sources, the arrests showed that cocaine trafficking no longer took place only in major cities. More remote islands such as Koh Phangan had become targets for transnational drug rings, they said. Officers indicated that controlled buys would be used more frequently in future to identify and arrest further suspects involved in the trade.
