PHUKET, THAILAND – At about 15:35 on October 18, a former Danish professional boxer climbed onto the roof of a house in the Soi Namdeum Green area of Karon, prompting a large emergency response and terrifying nearby residents.
Rooftop standoff in Karon
Witnesses rang the Karon police after seeing the man yelling, gesturing wildly and balancing on the roof of a residential building, apparently prepared to jump. Several police vehicles, rescue teams and alarmed neighbours arrived at the scene within minutes, the quiet afternoon turning into a tense public spectacle.
Chaotic scene and intervention
Arriving officers found a chaotic scene: the man was shouting incomprehensibly and appeared to be extremely intoxicated, according to eyewitnesses. Attempts by residents and responding officers to coax him down failed. “We tried to calm him, but he did not respond,” a neighbour told reporters.
Local senior officers and emergency personnel took charge of the operation. Pol. Capt. Thiyuth Suksanguan and Pol. Lt. Col. Sumit Suksamran, together with the head of the local administration and Dr. Winai Chitchew, coordinated a risky rescue plan as the situation escalated.
After minutes of high tension, officers managed to bring the man down from the roof and restrain him. No one was injured in the operation, and the crowd that had gathered on the street breathed a collective sigh of relief.
Investigation and motives
Police later identified the man as a Dane who is currently living in the Kata area of Phuket and who has a background as a professional boxer. Early inquiries suggested the rooftop incident was not a premeditated suicide attempt.
“Apparently he was simply heavily drunk and acted without thinking,” a police officer said, summarising the initial assessment. Officers reported no immediate evidence of self-harm intent or a threat to others, based on first statements and the circumstances at the scene.
Aftermath and warnings
Following the rescue, the man was taken to Chalong Hospital for medical examination and observation to rule out injuries or medical complications from the alcohol excess. While under the influence he remained under supervision, and authorities said he could face legal and medical consequences if further problems arise.
Local officials praised the swift cooperation between police, rescue workers and residents, saying that rapid intervention prevented a worse outcome. Authorities also urged members of the public to call emergency services at once in similar situations, rather than attempting risky interventions on their own.
The incident has been referred to local investigators for follow-up. Police said they would continue enquiries to determine whether any further action was required once the man had been medically assessed and sober.
