BANGKOK, THAILAND – A mass of cold air from China is expected to sweep across Thailand from November 13 to 21, bringing strong winds and lower temperatures to the north and northeast, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said.
Cold front arrives early
Meteorologists at the TMD in Bangkok reported that a powerful cold air mass from China would reach Thailand’s northern provinces on November 13, 2024, remaining active until November 21, 2024. The agency forecasted a shift toward milder daytime weather and noticeably cooler nights across cities such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Udon Thani.

Officials confirmed that the weather shift would mark the earliest onset of the Thai winter this year, with average night temperatures in certain highland districts projected to fall under 15°C.
Heavy rainfall in the South
While northern and northeastern regions cool down, the southern provinces, including Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, were expected to receive intensified rainfall due to a low-pressure zone over the Gulf of Thailand. The TMD’s forecast identified strong waves and persistent rain through the same November 13–21 period.
Residents were advised to monitor daily updates from the meteorological office, particularly in coastal areas prone to flash floods and rough sea conditions. The combination of northern dryness and southern humidity typified Thailand’s transitional weather phase.

The Ministry of Public Health released health guidance during the cold spell, urging citizens to guard against respiratory illness caused by the abrupt temperature changes. Officials emphasized focus on young children and elderly groups.

The TMD, meanwhile, said cool-season travelers planning domestic trips in the highlands of the North or northeastern plateaus could expect comfortable weather and minimal rainfall. For those heading south to Phuket or Songkhla, officials advised the use of umbrellas and awareness of strong coastal winds.
