Chiang Mai clamps down on lanterns for Yi Peng festival
Chiang Mai authorities announce sweeping restrictions on lanterns and fireworks in six districts ahead of the 2025 Yi Peng Lanna Light Festival.
Six districts face strict lantern and firework ban
The Chiang Mai Provincial Clerk, Chainarong Nantasa, confirms that six districts are now classified as Special Surveillance Level 1, or Red Zones. In these areas, releasing sky lanterns, fireworks, and similar objects is strictly prohibited during the festival.
The affected districts include all subdistricts of Mueang Chiang Mai and Hang Dong, as well as specific subdistricts in Saraphi, San Sai, Mae Rim, and San Pa Tong. The Toffy Zone, a designated flight safety area, is also off-limits.
New rules aim to protect safety and airspace
Officials say the crackdown is designed to safeguard both public safety and airspace during the annual celebrations. “Clear guidelines have been issued to prevent accidents and protect flights,” Chainarong Nantasa states.
Lanterns and fireworks are only allowed in authorised areas and during specific time windows. Smoke lanterns may be released on November 5 between 10am and 12pm, while sky lanterns, fire lanterns, and fireworks are permitted from 7pm to 1am, but only in approved zones.
Heavy penalties for breaking festival rules
Violators of these new regulations face tough consequences. Offenders could receive up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both. If their actions cause a fire, penalties rise to seven years’ imprisonment and a 140,000 baht fine.
Residents hoping to participate must apply for permission via the “Bampen” mobile app and register with their district office within the required timeframe.
