Thailand Sets Hard Deadline for Cambodian Civilians to Leave Ban Nong Chan
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirms that Cambodian civilians must leave Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo province by Friday, enforcing a border agreement.
Government Moves to Enforce Border Agreement
Anutin Charnvirakul announces today that the Thai government is acting on a General Border Committee (GBC) agreement with Cambodia. The main keyword, Cambodian civilians, is at the heart of this move.
He states, “Any area that falls within the territory of the Kingdom of Thailand must be vacated. That is all.”
The GBC agreement includes four main points: withdrawal of weapons, withdrawal of troops, crackdown on scammer networks, and improved border management.
Human Rights Concerns Dismissed
When questioned about human rights and legal fairness, Anutin is firm.
“Thai people deserve justice. Every Thai citizen is subject to the same law. Those who encroach on Thai territory unlawfully must leave. It’s that simple,” he says.
Military and Diplomatic Response
Anutin explains that the military has full authority to protect Thailand’s sovereignty.
“I’ve tasked the military with protecting our sovereignty and territorial integrity, with full government support. Diplomacy is now under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he adds.
He also instructs the provincial governor of Sa Kaeo to act according to the agreement.
Ongoing Situation at the Border
Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit notes that some Cambodian nationals remain in Ban Nong Chan and nearby areas.
He reveals that the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters and the chief of defence forces are now responsible for managing the situation.
Regional Border Committee talks are delayed, with the next meeting for the Second Army Region set for October 14.
The fate of Cambodian civilians in Ban Nong Chan remains uncertain as the deadline approaches.
