Surge in dam outflow
Since September 17, 2025, the Chao Phraya Dam has increased its discharge from 2,100 to 2,500 cubic metres per second. Officials warn that water levels in low-lying areas outside flood barriers could rise by 10–30 centimetres.
Districts on alert
The provinces affected include Chainat, Sing Buri and Ang Thong. Specific areas under warning are Sapphaya (Chainat); In Buri, Mueang Sing Buri and Phrom Buri (Sing Buri); and Mueang Ang Thong, Wiset Chai Chan, Pa Mok and Chaiyo (Ang Thong), along with surrounding communities.
Cell Broadcast alerts reach thousands
Working with AIS, True and National Telecom (NT), the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) sent Cell Broadcast warnings directly to residents’ mobile phones—ensuring rapid alerts in the affected zones, similar to Europe’s severe weather warning systems. Residents are urged to safeguard belongings, assist vulnerable individuals, and monitor local updates closely.
Impact on the region
The increased outflow is intended to relieve dam pressure and prevent catastrophic failure. Low-lying areas along the river will feel the immediate effects. Just yesterday, Ayutthaya province reported flooding in six districts, affecting 25,000 households and causing one fatality. The current measures aim to prevent similar disasters from spreading.
Emergency response
The DDPM has activated 24-hour hotlines via Line @1784DDPM and the 1784 hotline for reports and assistance. Thailand is experiencing one of its strongest monsoon seasons in recent years, pushing several dams close to capacity. Controlled water releases are critical to prevent a major dam breach, but residents remain on high alert.
