British tourist missing after Christmas call

Family and police search for Welsh man last seen during trip in Thailand

PONTYPOOL, UK – A Welsh tourist who spoke cheerfully with his family on Christmas morning was missing without a trace by the end of the day, triggering an international search.

Last Christmas video call before disappearance

Between 9 and 10 a.m. on Christmas morning, Mark Counsell held a video call with his family, during which he was described as being in excellent spirits and looking forward to his trip. After that conversation, all contact broke off, and repeated attempts to reach him by phone or online failed. His relatives in Pontypool were deeply worried as the silence continued.

Police launch public search across borders

Gwent Police issued a public appeal for information and asked urgently for help from the public. His last known location was Thailand, but investigators believed he might have travelled on to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. His precise whereabouts since Christmas Day remained unclear, and authorities were working with international counterparts to pick up the trail.

“The disappearance is very distressing for his family.”

said a police spokesperson.

Description of the missing Welsh traveller

Police released a detailed description of the missing man. Counsell was about 1.75 metres tall with an average build and short brown hair with shaved sides. He had a distinctive brown-red beard, longer at the chin, and was last seen wearing a khaki Fred Perry T-shirt.

A long‑planned dream trip turns into a mystery

His family stressed that the journey had been carefully planned and eagerly awaited. There were no indications of personal problems or any intention to disappear. The sudden and complete break in contact was described as the most troubling aspect, with relatives noting that such silence was highly unusual in today’s digital world.

Authorities and family appeal for information

British police were working with the Foreign Office and authorities in Thailand and Malaysia to explore every possibility. Officers appealed to anyone who had travelled or was travelling in Southeast Asia to report possible sightings of Counsell. Even small pieces of information could prove crucial, and anyone with details was urged to contact Gwent Police as the family clung to hope that their dream holiday would not end in tragedy.
