BANGKOK, THAILAND – A 21-year-old British man was found dead in a central Bangkok hotel room in mid-January, with the exact cause of death to be determined by a detailed autopsy.
Body discovered in Sukhumvit hotel room
According to Lumpini police, an emergency call was received on 13 January at 3:16 p.m. reporting an unconscious foreign man in a hotel room on Sukhumvit Soi 7/1. Officers attended the scene with a forensic doctor and examined the room in the busy commercial and nightlife area of Bangkok. The deceased was identified as Joshua Kershaw, a British national from Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
Initial forensic findings at the scene
Police said the body was lying on its back on the floor of the hotel room. During the first examination, investigators noted several findings, including bruising on the back of the right hand, fine white foam around the mouth, and pale conjunctiva in both eyes. At the same time, officers reported that no bleeding was observed and no injuries were found on the inner side of the lips.
Autopsy at Chulalongkorn Hospital
The body was transferred to the forensic institute of Chulalongkorn Hospital, where a detailed autopsy was to determine the precise cause of death. Investigators from the Lumpini station told the outlet Khaosod English that complete autopsy results were expected within a few days.
“As long as the investigation is ongoing, no further details can be released.”
said police investigators.
Family learned of death nine days later
The case drew particular attention after the man’s family in the United Kingdom stated publicly that they had been searching for the 21-year-old and learned of his death only nine days after he had died. Police said they were informed of the death on 13 January and, after securing initial evidence at the hotel, immediately notified the British embassy in Bangkok. The authorities said no definitive conclusion could be reached without the full expert report.
Case treated as open investigation
Police said the case was being handled as an open investigation, with all further steps dependent on the forensic findings. The agency stressed that no final assessment could be made before the complete autopsy results were available.
“The investigation will continue until the autopsy is completed.”
said the responsible officers.
Questions over communication and travel safety
The incident raised broader questions about how a young man could die alone in a hotel room so far from home while his family remained unaware for nine days. The case prompted debate over whether stricter reporting chains between hotels, authorities and embassies are needed, or whether it illustrates how easily people can “disappear” abroad without timely answers for relatives.
