The incident occurred on the afternoon of 19 September in Layan Soi 7, Choeng Thale. The 40-year-old American, an internationally practising lawyer residing in Switzerland, was heading to his accommodation when the assailants pursued him by car. In heavy rain, they rammed his motorcycle, forcing him to stop. Two men struck him on the neck with a knife handle and threatened: “Give us the watch, or it will get worse!” Under threat of further violence, he surrendered his luxury timepiece. The gang fled the scene in multiple vehicles.
Swift arrest by Phuket police
Authorities quickly acted. On the same day, the four suspects – Hussain M. (26), Mir Wayne C. (25), Yanne S. (25), and Malique Kai W. (27) – were captured at a villa in Choeng Thale. Police seized three vehicles and the stolen watch during searches. “We believe this was a carefully orchestrated crime,” a spokesperson said. “The gang appears to have targeted wealthy foreigners.” The American confirmed he had no connection to the men and had never been a victim in Thailand despite over 60 previous visits.
International trail
The victim, holding three passports, had been on Phuket for around ten days. Before the attack, he visited a café, local markets, a laundry, and a convenience store. His phone was stored in the motorcycle box, and the rain disoriented him, preventing a call for help. Witnesses reported at least three vehicles were involved, suggesting coordinated planning.
