Tensions erupt at disputed border
The clash occurred around boundary markers 42–43 near Ban Nong Ya Kaeo in Sa Kaeo province, a long-contested stretch between Thailand and Cambodia. Thai authorities reported that Cambodian demonstrators had attacked officers, prompting a rapid response.
Colonel Thaworn Dulyawit, commander of Sa Kaeo provincial police, mobilised riot-control units to maintain order in the heavily forested border area.
Escalation follows prior incursions
Tensions had been building since the previous day, when Cambodian civilians reportedly entered Thai territory and removed barbed wire fences installed by Thai forces. The actions caused significant damage to border infrastructure.
In response, Sa Kaeo Governor Prainya Photiksat submitted a formal complaint to his Cambodian counterpart Um Reatrey at the Poipet checkpoint, condemning the breach of Thai sovereignty.
Crowd control turns violent
On Wednesday afternoon, authorities said large groups again gathered on the Cambodian side, attempting to cross the border and throwing objects at Thai security forces. Officers fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation.
A long-running dispute
The border area is strategically important and rich in natural resources. Both governments claim the land around the disputed markers, and tensions have periodically flared over the years.
Thai authorities said they would provide updates as the situation develops. No official statement has yet been issued by the Cambodian government regarding the incident.
